The New Year is the perfect time for fresh starts. No doubt you've been thinking about different ways to improve your life and habits but have you included giving your home an update too? This can easily be a very costly endeavour but we have come up with eight quick and simple ways to give your room a freshen up and makeover with no need to hire a decorator.
1 - Give your room a new colour scheme with accessories, soft furnishings and art work
You can easily breathe new life into a space by changing the dominant colours in the room but there's no need to go all out and re-paint your walls. Choose your new colour scheme and then find decorative pieces and textiles in this colour to bring a new feel to your space. Cushions, vases, throw blankets and ornaments are all great pieces to use but you could even repurpose existing items with paints and dyes if you're feel crafty.
2 - Invest in a large decorative rug to add dimension and pattern
Not only does a floor rug add a feeling of cosiness but depending on your chosen pattern and colours it can also make your space appear bigger. Choose a shape to suit that of your room and try to leave an equal space between the edges and the furniture that surrounds the rug, unless your opting to go big and place either the front half or all of your furniture on to it.
3 - Breathe life into a room with plants
Not only does plant life add interest to a room and make it look more pulled together, there are many practical benefits to them too. Plants help purify the air in a room which is better for our bodies and can help with certain ailments but they are also great for reducing stress and helping you concentrate.
4 - Add focus with a statement print or create a gallery wall
One of the big decor trends of the year is set to be the oversized statement print. Find a design that catches your eye and makes you feel happy so you'll love seeing it every day - even better if it ties in with your colour scheme. Alternatively why not create a gallery wall with a mixture of your own photos, art pieces and meaningful quotes to remind you of great times past and yet to come.
5 - Change your light fittings or introduce mood lighting
Changing your light fittings to something more design led can make a big difference and be relatively low in cost. You can also add cosiness by swapping wall or ceiling lights for table and standing lamps. We have a lovely selection of handmade Orla Kiely print lampshades available here if you love retro or Mid Century Modern chic.
6 - Make your storage part of the decoration
There's no need to pack your clutter into ugly old boxes or shove it into drawers or cupboards; invest in some beautiful baskets or decorative boxes and make it a part of your decor scheme. If your shelving unit is looking tired and boring you could even paint the inside of the shelves in a contrasting colour or brighten them up with wallpaper samples.
7 - Rearrange your existing furniture
Having a move around can make such a big difference to a space and costs nothing but some time and muscle. You may find out that there's a much better way to lay out your roo, but it's best to plan where things will be moved beforehand to prevent frustration. Think about where your lights and windows are compared to any screens to avoid glare and make sure to leave enough space for ease of movement around the room.
8 - Change your window dressings
Despite being one of the main focal points of a room the windows are often overlooked when it comes to decorating, but adding a new window blind is a great way to freshen up a space and carry through a colour scheme.
While aesthetics are key and we have an impressive range of colours and patterns available, why not also think about your practical needs from a blind.
Would a Blackout Blind be useful to prevent glare and add privacy?
A Sunscreen Blind is great for windows that are overlooked as they add privacy while not losing all the natural light.
Perhaps a Bottom Up Blind would work for a ground floor window or bathroom.
A Perfect Fit Blind is ideal for use in a conservatory or if you don't want to drill into your walls making them ideal for renters.
If you want the luxury look you could choose a Roman Blind or pick a stunning print from our Designer Blinds Collection.
