Light pollution is having an effect on our health

For most people falling asleep in a dark or pitch black environment is essential for a good night’s rest, but information from the American Medical Association shows that artificial light at night can have much greater effects than we previously thought.

Most modern lighting including that used to light our streets at night is now usually provided by LED bulbs which provide a blue toned light as opposed to the warm yellow toned light of traditional bulbs. The hormone melatonin which induces sleep is particularly sensitive to this blue light and so bedrooms that are not protected from external light by a blackout effect window dressing will not be conducive to drifting off and maintaining an uninterrupted night’s rest.

The same kind of blue rich light is that given out my modern televisions and smartphones which is one of the main reasons it is advised not to use them just before or when going to bed to help you fall asleep much quicker. This cool toned light is also brighter than that given out by standard bulbs, but contrary to popular belief human vision relies on contrast rather than the amount of light for better sight so avoiding reducing the glare given out by lighting, electrical goods and tech gear would actually result in improved vision.

What can I do to help myself and my family get a great night's sleep?

  • Try to avoid using blue toned bulbs in bedrooms and other areas you use before bedtime such as the bathroom

  • Give yourself a break from technology for at least half an hour before going to bed to let your eyes and brain adjust and relax

  • Make sure that you have an appropriate mattress to suit your body - different people have varying needs when it comes to spine and limp support and how firm a mattress to use

  • Make sure your window dressings block out as much exterior light as possible.

Our Thermal Plus range even helps to keep the room warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.

Total Blackout Blinds
If you are looking for a complete blackout effect with minimum installation fuss our Total Blackout collection is ideal. The completely cordless system is inherently child safe and not only does the complete light blockage assist with sleep and screen glare reduction, but they also reduce heat loss by up to 43%. Drill free installation makes them extremely easy to fit and they can be stopped at any position for full light control personalisation.
Also available in Total Blackout XL for windows larger than 190cm wide.

Perfect Fit Blackout Blinds
This innovative system allows you to fit a blackout blind to PVC windows and doors without the need for drilling. They create a smart looking finish that can be fitted in minutes. Our perfect fit blackout blinds are completely cord free so are great for houses with pets or children.
They do not however provide total blackout as light will bounce around the frame of the blind as the fabric is not enclosed, so if this is required the Total Blackout system above is the best option.
