What are the best blinds for a living room?

But as well as creating the right ambiance, there are practical aspects that also need to be considered when designing the ideal living room:

Privacy and Security
Having space to ourselves is important, so if your living room is street facing giving yourself some privacy is a key concern. These rooms also tend to be where a lot of our most valuable possessions are kept such as TV’s, gaming systems and other technology that you might not want to be seen by prying eyes.

Reducing Sun Glare
Speaking of technology, there are few things more annoying than settling down to watch TV and the sun glaring onto the screen obscuring most of the picture. Depending on the direction the room faces it can even disturb you when reading or using your phone when the sun moves into eye level.

UV Protection
As well as the room where we keep a lot of technology, a living room is often where we display our most precious belongings like photographs, books and artwork as well as investment pieces like sofas and other furniture. All of these things are susceptible to UV damage which can cause colours and images to fade and even contribute to fabric degradation over time, but thankfully you can use window dressings to help prevent this.

The Solutions

Sunscreen Fabric
Our hero product for those who want to reduce glare and UV damage without losing their view is our Sunscreen fabric, available in several blind types including roller, double roller, vertical and perfect fit blinds. This ‘magic’ solution uses mesh technology to allow you to enjoy the view outside while blocking glare from the sun, but also blocks the view of those looking in from the outside.

The effect is controlled by the levels of light with the side with the brightest light having the view blocked, so you need to bear in mind that at night when you have lights on and it’s dark outside the effect is reversed. Because of this a lot of our customers choose our Double Roller Blinds that combine a sunscreen blind and a blackout blind in one system, so the sunscreen can be used during the day and the blackout pulled down at night to give privacy. Alternatively some people will have a sunscreen blind within their window recess coupled with a blackout roller or roman blind or curtains outside of the recess for use at night.

Blackout Fabric

Alternatively if you’re more concerned with light blockage than the view outside, our blackout fabric is a great option.

This fabric uses a special backing to make it completely opaque so no light can pass through it while also providing thermal benefits, helping to keep the heat in during the winter and reflecting the heat of the sun during the Summer.

If you’re a film fan and fancy creating your own home cinema space, blackout fabric is a wonderful choice as you can make your room even darker to help get that movie theatre experience.

Venetian Blinds

If you’re looking for versatility a venetian blind could be perfect. If you’re looking for privacy or light blockage simply lower the blinds and tilt the slats closed. When you want a little more light but to keep a level of privacy leave the blind down and adjust the angle of the slats to suit, or finally for an unimpeded view and to let in as much light as possible tilt the slats to the horizontal position and raise it fully.

For a timeless, classic look you can choose either Faux Wood or Real Wood Venetian Blinds in a natural wood finish or a more modern painted slat look. Alternatively our Aluminium Venetian Blinds are ideal for contemporary spaces or those that want a wide choice of colours.

Bay Windows

Getting blinds to fit bay windows can be a little more complex as you need to choose a type that can be fitted closely next to each other and still be operable. Depending on your window type, we would recommend the following blinds for use in bay windows:
